Gustav Stickley

Gustav Stickley (March 9, 1858 - April 21, 1942) was a furniture maker and architect as well as the leading spokesperson for the American Craftsman movement, a descendant of the British Arts and Crafts movement. (Source: Wikipedia - see link below for complete article)

It is said that Gustav Stickley, who was already a minor furniture maker, was greatly influenced by a visit to England in 1897 and returned to the US with new goals. Gustav Stickley influences were varied - from English Furniture he had seen, to simple American cabinet makers in 17th & early 18th centuries, as well as the Shaker style.

He used the term 'Craftsman' to describe his work rather than 'Arts and Crafts' but he is regarded as an Arts and Crafts maker.
